Abia starts work on 15MVA substation to improve Umuahia electricity supply

The Abia State Government has begun constructing a 15MVA injection substation at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia to improve electricity supply in the state capital, Premium Times reported. Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu announced the project after a state Executive Council meeting. He said it was being executed in collaboration with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.

According to Mr. Kanu, the substation is expected to improve electricity supply and benefit residents of Umuahia when completed. The source material does not provide a completion date or project cost.

The commissioner also said power restoration projects were under way in Ohafia, Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, and Ezere and Acha in Isuikwuato Local Government Area. The Abam project has entered its second phase, covering four communities, while the Ohafia project was described as almost complete. Power restoration to Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North and parts of Ukwa East is expected to begin in a fortnight, Mr.

Kanu said. He also reported that renewable-energy deployment was continuing at primary healthcare centres across the state. The state government has established a standard requiring every functional primary healthcare centre to be accompanied by renewable energy, according to the commissioner.

He expressed concern about vandalism of power assets and urged traditional rulers, town unions and security agencies to help prevent it. Mr. Kanu said water projects were also being implemented under the state’s Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme.

Five schemes were undergoing rehabilitation, while eight more had been selected with support from Denmark’s Impact Fund for feasibility studies and possible development of climate-resilient infrastructure.
