ADC says Atiku would offer an accessible presidency if elected in 2027

The council’s Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the statement on Monday in Abuja while receiving leaders of the Atiku Unity Movement, led by Francis Eburuwe. Ologbondiyan said Atiku would not be an “absentee President” and argued that Nigeria needed a leader who would be physically available when urgent national decisions were required.
He said the country needed “firm and focused leadership”. According to Ologbondiyan, Atiku had shown an understanding of Nigeria’s economic and social difficulties and had proposed measures aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, reducing living costs and restoring confidence in public institutions. He referred to Atiku’s position during the 2023 presidential campaign that fuel subsidy removal should be phased in to avoid placing excessive pressure on Nigerians.
Ologbondiyan said developments in the past three years had reinforced the need for an accessible presidency capable of making timely decisions. The campaign council also highlighted Atiku’s proposal for a production-based intervention involving petroleum products refined in Nigeria. The proposal would include a fixed spending limit, National Assembly approval and independent audits.
The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has criticised the plan, questioning its legal, fiscal and operational framework and its compatibility with the Petroleum Industry Act. Eburuwe said the Atiku Unity Movement was committed to the former vice-president’s candidacy. He said the group would take the campaign message across the country and urged its members to focus on grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement came amid political debate over President Bola Tinubu’s extended stay outside Nigeria, while the Presidency has said he continued official duties remotely.
