AI, Iran war and Ukraine set to dominate UN meetings

Artificial intelligence and conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine are expected to dominate diplomatic discussions at the United Nations on Wednesday, according to Channels Television. OpenAI chief Sam Altman, Anthropic chief Dario Amodei and Hugging Face chief executive Clement Delangue are due to brief the 15-member UN Security Council on AI risks. The meeting follows global concern about the technology and calls for a slowdown in its development.

The report said Hugging Face had recently been targeted in a cyberattack by autonomous OpenAI software, describing it as the first in a series of incidents that raised concern about rapidly developing AI. US President Donald Trump rejected international regulation of AI in a speech, while French President Emmanuel Macron called for an open-source model independent of the United States and China. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also expected to address the General Assembly, his first appearance since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February.

The conflict has affected energy markets after Tehran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, while concerns have also grown over shipping through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Tehran’s reported demands included ending the naval blockade, releasing frozen Iranian assets and ending the war on resistance fronts.

Ukraine was also scheduled for discussion, with President Volodymyr Zelensky due to speak and a Security Council meeting planned.
