BJP intensifies criticism of Rahul Gandhi and Opposition over voter-list revision

The Bharatiya Janata Party intensified its criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition parties on Sunday over the Election Commission’s special intensive revision exercise. In a statement, the BJP accused Mr. Gandhi and Opposition leaders of making unsubstantiated claims and attempting to undermine constitutional institutions.

It said the Election Commission had already issued a press note and fact-based clarification addressing what the party described as fabricated allegations. The BJP deployed chief ministers and other senior leaders across States to counter the Opposition’s campaign. Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath, Devendra Fadnavis, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bhajan Lal Sharma, Bhupendra Patel, Nayab Singh Saini, Vishnu Deo Sai, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Rekha Gupta, Samrat Choudhary, Mohan Yadav and Suvendu Adhikari criticised the Congress and its allies.

Fadnavis accused Gandhi of seeking to discredit constitutional bodies under the guise of defending the Constitution. Adityanath called on the Congress and its allies to apologise, while Sarma described the Opposition as an alliance of defeated parties. Other BJP leaders alleged that the Opposition was spreading misinformation, creating confusion and applying double standards to the revision process.

Adhikari said the Congress supported the exercise in Kerala because it had won there but opposed it in West Bengal after losing the election. Choudhary said voter-list “purification” was necessary. The BJP also alleged that the controversy was being used to divert attention from the Congress’s electoral setbacks and other political failures.
