Canada made the stronger start, scoring through number eight Lizzie Gibson and prop DaLeaka Menin after sustained close-range pressure. England responded with tries from Exeter wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald and prop Hannah Botterman, but their performance lacked some of the fluency and forward momentum that has characterised their long winning sequence.
Moloney-MacDonald added a second try after a carry by Sadia Kabeya, while Canada had a potential score ruled out when a solo effort from Asia Hogan-Rochester was judged to have followed a forward pass. Menin crossed again just before half-time, leaving the teams level at 19-19.
Canada continued to apply pressure after the interval, with England forced to rely on a turnover in their own 22 to create an escape route. That opportunity led to a try for hooker Bryony Field, who was making her first international start.
