Chelle says tactical switch helped Nigeria overturn Madagascar deficit

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle said a change in formation helped the Super Eagles overcome Madagascar’s compact defensive shape in their 2-1 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory on Friday. Nigeria fell behind in the 15th minute at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo when Ehsan Kari scored for Madagascar. George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time before fellow debutant Moses Usor completed the comeback in the 65th minute.

Chelle said Nigeria began with a diamond formation but struggled to find space through the middle against Madagascar’s low block. The team initially resorted to attempts from distance before moving to a 4-2-3-1 system. The coach explained that the change was intended to use the wide areas and create opportunities through crosses.

He said the switch eventually helped Nigeria produce more chances and turn the game around. Despite the win, Chelle gave a mixed assessment of the performance. He said Nigeria’s first mistake led to the conceded goal and added that the players were not technically good enough in some situations while chasing the score.

He praised the team’s mentality after going behind, saying the players gave everything for the national team. The victory gave Nigeria three points in its opening Group L qualifying match. Nigeria’s next fixture is against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday.

Chelle said the team must analyse the Madagascar match and then prepare for a different opponent, whose strengths and weaknesses would require a separate tactical plan. He did not confirm whether Nigeria would use the same formation.
