Concussion stand-down rules rule Watson out of NRL grand final
Sydney Roosters hooker Connor Watson will miss Sunday’s NRL grand final after failing to secure clearance from an 11-day mandatory stand-down for a category-one concussion. Benaiah Ioelu is the likely replacement, while Newcastle are also considering options for suspended hooker Phoenix Crossland.
Sydney Roosters hooker Connor Watson has been ruled out of Sunday’s NRL grand final after failing to overturn an mandatory concussion stand-down. Watson suffered a category-one concussion during the Roosters’ preliminary-final victory over the Dolphins. He was initially named on the interchange bench for the decider against Newcastle, but the NRL’s rules require players diagnosed with that level of concussion to serve an 11-day stand-down.
The 30-year-old had been testing well before meeting an independent specialist on Thursday. The Roosters confirmed on Friday that he had not received medical clearance to play. Watson became dazed and was removed from the field shortly after entering the preliminary final.
His absence means he will not face his former club in the grand final and has played his final match for the Roosters. The utility is due to join St George Illawarra next season before linking with the PNG Chiefs in 2028. He has made 127 NRL appearances for the Roosters.
Benaiah Ioelu is the most likely player to replace Watson in the 19-man squad. Ioelu has made 17 NRL appearances, mostly from the bench, and would provide cover for Reece Robson. Coach Trent Robinson said Ioelu had played well during the season and brought energy to the team.
Newcastle also face a selection decision after hooker Phoenix Crossland was suspended. Knights coach Justin Holbrook can choose Harrison Graham as a bench option or select Thomas Cant or Diesel Hagan. Newcastle do not have to finalise their team until 90 minutes before kick-off.
