The Emmy Awards ceremony paid tribute to actors, directors and performers who had died, with Catherine O’Hara receiving an especially emotional remembrance from former co-stars Macaulay Culkin, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy, BBC News reported.
Culkin, who played O’Hara’s son in the Home Alone films, called her “our mom” and recalled that she had always supported him. He joked about the films’ plot by saying she might have forgotten him twice, but added that “we will always remember her.” O’Hara died in January aged 71. She was also known for playing Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, alongside Murphy and Levy.
Murphy said people had continued quoting O’Hara’s memorable lines since her death, describing those encounters as reminders of the impact she had made by bringing audiences joy. Levy urged people to accept opportunities to enjoy the presence of exceptional talent. BBC News said the tribute showed a large image of O’Hara and appeared to move Martin Short and Steve Martin in the audience.
Jamie Lee Curtis also delivered a tribute to Rob Reiner, who had died the previous December. She called him a “cherished legend” and “our beloved meathead,” referring to his acting work while highlighting his career as a director, writer and performer. Reiner’s films included When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, Misery and A Few Good Men.
Other tributes included a celebration of Farrah Fawcett by Charlie’s Angels co-stars Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz remembered members of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast and crew who had died, while Sally Field introduced a performance honoring country singer Dolly Parton.
Field described Parton as genuine, humble, supportive and funny, and praised her humanitarian contribution. The ceremony also acknowledged Cheers co-creator James Burrows and other entertainment figures remembered during the broadcast, BBC News reported.
