Emmys set for Los Angeles ceremony as Beef and The Pitt lead attention

The 78th Emmy Awards will take place in Los Angeles, with Beef, The Pitt, Hacks and Pluribus among the nominated programmes. Heated Rivalry is absent because its fully financed Canadian production did not meet the eligibility requirements for the US ceremony, according to BBC News.

The 78th Emmy Awards will be held on Monday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, bringing together nominees from comedy, drama and limited or anthology series. BBC News reports that Beef, Hacks, Pluribus and The Pitt are among the programmes competing for television’s major US awards.

The Pitt, last year’s best drama winner, returns to defend its title after its second series. Its star, Noah Wyle, is nominated for best drama actor, while the medical drama has eight individual acting nominations. Other drama contenders include Pluribus, Slow Horses, The Diplomat and A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms.

Hacks is expected to remain a strong contender in comedy after its fifth and final season. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are nominated for their performances, with Smart seeking another award after winning for her role in each of the show’s first four seasons. A further victory would give her eight Emmys, matching the total held by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman, BBC News says.

The second season of Beef is competing in the limited or anthology series categories, with Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac among its acting nominees. Other contenders include All Her Fault, The Beast in Me and DTF St Louis, whose stars Linda Cardellini and David Harbour won supporting acting prizes at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys.

Heated Rivalry, which stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, is not eligible for this year’s US awards. BBC News reports that the ice hockey romance is a fully financed Canadian production and lacks the US financial or broadcast involvement required for Emmy recognition. It will instead be eligible for the International Emmys in New York in November.

The final series of Stranger Things received seven nominations in technical categories but no nominations in the top categories. Euphoria received one acting nomination, for Zendaya. The ceremony begins at 17:00 Pacific time and will be broadcast in the US on NBC and Peacock; BBC News says no UK broadcaster is scheduled to show it live, though the BBC News website will provide coverage.
