Federal University Dutse expels 12 students over alleged offences

Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State has expelled 12 students over offences including alleged criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, cult-related activities and drug abuse on campus. The university also rusticated five students and issued warning letters to five others. The sanctions took immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahya.

Yahya said Vice-Chancellor Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel approved the sanctions after reviewing a report from the 20th meeting of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee. The expelled students were found guilty of offences including armed robbery, phone theft, robbery, cult-related activity and drug abuse, according to the statement. The university listed 11 of the students by name and identified another as having been sanctioned for a related offence.

Five students were rusticated for offences involving attempted sexual assault and cyberbullying. Four received two-semester rustications, while one was rusticated for one semester. Five others received warning letters over cyberbullying, attempted sexual assault and drug abuse off campus.

The university identified each warned student and the conduct associated with the sanction. The institution said it would not tolerate behaviour that damaged its reputation. Yahya said the university had zero tolerance for criminality, cultism, drug abuse and harassment, and urged students to obey the law.

He also asked parents and guardians to counsel their children against conduct that could end their academic careers.
