A fire at Abuja’s Kugbo Furniture Market affected 21 shops and one vehicle, the National Emergency Management Agency said. No casualties were recorded. Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, contained the blaze and concluded operations after recovering some items from the affected shops.

A fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja damaged 21 shops and one vehicle on Friday, the National Emergency Management Agency said. NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office said it received a distress call about the incident at approximately 11:15am on October 2, 2026. Relevant emergency response agencies were then activated and sent to the market.

The agency said the Federal Fire Service and other responders attended the scene. NEMA personnel supported crowd-control efforts and assisted firefighters as they worked to contain the blaze. “No casualties were recorded during the incident,” NEMA said in a statement issued by its Abuja Operations Office Press Unit.

However, a preliminary assessment found that 21 shops and one vehicle had been affected. The agency did not state the estimated financial value of the damage or identify the cause of the fire. NEMA said the fire was successfully dampened to prevent secondary outbreaks and limit further spread within the market.

Some valuable items were also recovered from the affected shops. Emergency operations at the scene ended at about 1:40pm, according to the agency. NEMA said it remained committed to supporting affected communities and coordinating emergency responses with other relevant stakeholders.

The statement did not indicate whether any investigation into the cause of the outbreak had begun.
