Four teenage girls die after boat capsizes in Jigawa
Four girls aged 12 and 13 died when a boat carrying eight people capsized at Dudduru Pond in Jigawa State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said. Four other passengers were rescued by nearby farmers and residents after strong winds reportedly overturned the boat.
Four teenage girls died after a boat carrying eight people capsized at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said. The incident occurred at about 4pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as the passengers travelled from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market. The pond is about three kilometres from Kwadige Village.
The NSCDC said preliminary information indicated that strong winds might have caused the boat to overturn. Four passengers survived and were rescued by farmers working near the pond, with residents of Kwadige and Kuna communities joining the rescue and recovery effort. The deceased were identified as 13-year-old Hasiya Mu’azu, 13-year-old Hauwa Lawan, 12-year-old Fatima Lawan and 13-year-old Dawsiyya Lawan.
The NSCDC said their bodies were later buried according to Islamic rites. The command’s public relations officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday. State Commandant CC Muhammad Ingawa expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Kwadige.
Ingawa urged communities using boats to exercise caution during strong winds and adverse weather. He also called on operators and passengers to follow basic water-safety measures and avoid travelling in dangerous conditions.
