Hyderabad police invoke preventive detention law against alleged illegal liquor seller

Hyderabad police have executed preventive-detention orders against a 45-year-old woman accused of repeatedly selling liquor illegally through a belt shop in Borabanda. The accused, identified by police as Vemula Sarala, lives in Banjara Nagar in Borabanda. Police said she had allegedly operated the unlicensed liquor outlet for several years and had been involved in multiple cases connected with unauthorised liquor sales.

The orders were issued under the Telangana Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act after approval by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar. Police executed the orders on Saturday, according to the report.

Authorities also warned people running belt shops or selling liquor without a valid licence in Borabanda to stop. Police said cases would be registered under the Telangana Excise Act against those involved in such activity. They added that habitual offenders could face action under the preventive-detention law.

People who provide premises or shelter for belt shops could also be named as accused, the police said. The warning extends beyond the person detained and targets others who may facilitate unlicensed liquor sales by providing locations or other support. Residents were asked to report illegal liquor sales by calling Dial 112. Police said the identities of informants would be kept confidential.
