India defeated defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final in Nagoya, winning Asian Games gold for the first time since 1982. India ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games women’s hockey gold by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in Friday’s final in Nagoya. Lalremsiami scored the only goal in the 10th minute, and goalkeeper Savita Punia later saved a penalty stroke as India protected their lead through sustained Chinese pressure. The victory also secured India direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

India made the breakthrough when Sakshi Rana found Lalremsiami inside the circle. The forward turned and struck a powerful reverse-stick shot into the upper part of the net, marking a decisive moment in her 200th appearance for India. China increased possession after conceding and forced India to defend for long periods.

India had already spent time with 10 players after Baljeet Kaur received a green card, but the defence stayed organised and limited clear chances. China’s best opportunity came in the second quarter when a penalty stroke was awarded after Lalremsiami was penalised for obstructing an attacker. Savita was brought on for the attempt and dived to her left to make the save.

The pressure continued after half-time, with China attacking from both flanks and earning penalty corners. India’s defenders repeatedly blocked or cleared dangerous moves, while captain Salima Tete made important interventions despite briefly leaving the field with an injury. China removed their goalkeeper in the closing minutes to add an outfield player and chase an equaliser.

India remained compact, cleared the ball and survived the final attacks until the hooter. The result gives India their second Asian Games women’s hockey title and their first since the 1982 Games in New Delhi. India had won silver in the 1998 and 2018 finals, but this time held on to claim gold and an Olympic berth.
