Irankunda’s free-kick brilliance puts Australia’s young forward in spotlight

Nestory Irankunda’s spectacular free kick against Brazil has drawn renewed attention to the young Australian forward and his potential importance to the Socceroos. The Sporting player’s goal was the standout moment in a match featuring several of Brazil’s internationally recognised attackers. Irankunda curled the ball over a four-player wall and into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Hugo Souza unable to reach it.

Speaking to Channel 10, he said he had attempted similar efforts before, sometimes missing completely, and described the successful strike as a good goal. The forward also impressed with his movement on the left. During the first half, he turned Chelsea player Estêvão in midfield and accelerated away, while an earlier effort from a similar attacking position forced a save from Souza.

His performance gave Australia a direct threat from open play and set pieces. The report said Australia controlled significant periods of the first half, moving forward with purpose and creating chances against a Brazilian midfield that struggled to contain them. Brazil later improved, with players including Endrick, Raphinha, Estêvão and Vinícius Júnior involved, but the match’s most memorable individual contribution came from Irankunda.

Irankunda joined Sporting from Watford during the off-season but had made only one start in five Portuguese Primeira Liga matches and had not scored or assisted for the club, according to the report. Sporting’s social media team nevertheless quickly celebrated his goal, labelling it “GOLAÇO”. The report argued that his display could strengthen the case for giving him more opportunities at club level.

It also said Australia coach Tony Popovic’s decision to use Irankunda on the left allowed the player to cut inside onto his right foot. The performance may raise expectations, although the report noted that consistency will be judged over subsequent matches.
