Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic missions to embassies, following a meeting between their foreign ministers and the US ambassador to the United Nations in New York, according to France 24 and statements issued after the talks.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry statement said the countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations, raising their missions to embassy level and appointing ambassadors. A joint statement released by the US mission to the UN said full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations were in the interests of both countries and would contribute to peace.
Israel and Morocco established diplomatic ties in 2020 under the US-led Abraham Accords, through which several Arab states normalised relations with Israel. Wednesday’s announcement represents a further formal step in those ties, although the statements did not specify when the embassies would open.
France 24 reported that Israel had made a similar announcement in June 2022, during a visit to Morocco by then-Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. The latest statements did not explain why the earlier plan had not resulted in the opening of embassies.
The two countries also said a series of economic agreements would be concluded by the end of the year. Israel’s Foreign Ministry added that high-level reciprocal visits were expected in the coming months, but no further details were provided about the agreements or the planned visits.
