Jonathan and Fubara urge Rivers monarchs to lead with purpose

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have urged traditional rulers in Rivers State to provide purposeful and selfless leadership. They also called on monarchs to preserve the traditions and heritage of their communities. Their remarks came at the coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom on Saturday.

Jonathan congratulated the new king and offered his support and guidance. Recalling the history of the throne and the role of the first King Jaja, he said the new reign should bring peace, development and unity to Opobo. Fubara, represented by his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, described the coronation as both a historic event and a celebration of tradition and culture.

He said traditional institutions had an important role in preserving cultural values, promoting unity and maintaining peace. The governor urged King Jaja to provide purposeful leadership and contribute to the development and stability of Rivers State. He also said the government would work with traditional rulers as partners in state development.

The newly installed monarch pledged to uphold the sovereignty and dignity of Opobo. He said he would serve with truth, justice and unity, and would not dishonour the throne established by the founders of the kingdom. The ceremony was attended by several traditional and political figures, including the Obi of Onitsha, the Olu of Warri, the King of Bonny Kingdom and former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

King Jaja also thanked the Rivers State Government and other supporters.
