The Kebbi State Government has awarded a contract for a major erosion-control project in the Badariya and Malala areas of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital. The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Musa Muhammad Tungulawa, announced the contract while briefing journalists. He said the project was initiated in 2004 but was abandoned by successive administrations.
The contractor has now mobilised to the site ahead of an official flag-off by Governor Nasir Idris. Tungulawa said the government had formed a committee to inventory houses and other structures that could be affected. A separate committee will handle compensation for people affected by the work.
The commissioner estimated that about 50,000 people could benefit directly and indirectly. He said the project is intended to address flooding and gully erosion, protect communities, restore degraded land and reclaim affected areas. He added that planned water-control infrastructure could support livestock development and irrigation farming.
The project is expected to be completed within 15 months.
