Kebbi government warns parties against violence ahead of 2027 elections

The Kebbi State Government has warned political parties, their supporters and other stakeholders against thuggery, violence and destruction of property ahead of the 2027 general elections. The government also condemned violence recently reported in parts of Jega Local Government Area and described the incident as unacceptable. It called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris, made the position known in a statement issued on Sunday. He said political differences should be addressed through dialogue and lawful democratic processes rather than confrontation. Idris urged security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation or status.

He said insecurity should not be used to justify attacks on people, political organisations or property. The government appealed to political parties, supporters, community leaders and other stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory statements that could heighten tension. It also commended security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders for efforts to restore calm in Jega.

The administration expressed sympathy to residents who suffered losses during the incident and said their concerns would receive the attention of relevant authorities. It warned that politically motivated violence must not undermine the state’s development programmes and projects. Idris said no individual, group or organisation could claim a monopoly of violence.

The government urged citizens to reject violent conduct and rhetoric that could threaten peace and democratic participation. It also appealed to religious and community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence among Kebbi’s multi-ethnic and religious communities. The government said Governor Idris remained committed to working with security agencies and communities to protect peace and support the state’s development.
