Keltron starts integrating sonar systems for indigenous Jalkapi underwater vessel

Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited, known as Keltron, has begun integrating sonar systems developed for the indigenously manufactured Jalkapi underwater vessel system. Industries, Commerce, IT and AI Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty inaugurated the integration phase at Keltron Electro Ceramics Limited in Kuttippuram on Monday.
The event formed part of the United Democratic Front government’s first 100-day action programme. The systems being integrated include bow array and flank array sonars. Keltron has completed their manufacture, with electronic modules developed at Keltron Controls in Aroor and sensors developed at its Malappuram unit.
Kunhalikutty said Keltron was an institution of which Kerala could be proud. He said its ability to manufacture products using advanced technology was a matter of pride and assured the company that the government would support its development initiatives. Commodore Amit Ray, Deputy Director General for Submarine Design, represented the Indian Navy at the event and provided details of the project.
The source material does not provide the vessel’s intended deployment or the overall value of the sonar contract. The company also reported a separate development involving its Keltron Equipment Complex in Karakulam, Thiruvananthapuram. The complex has received a contract to manufacture power electronics products for units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
The contract was received from Subhashish Roy, executive director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. Keltron said it was its first direct order from NPCIL. The Kuttippuram event was attended by local elected representatives, employees’ union representatives and Keltron staff.
Keltron managing director Sreekumar Nair welcomed the gathering, while KECL managing director Jacob Tharakan delivered the vote of thanks. The report described the sonar integration and the NPCIL contract but did not state when either project would be completed.
