Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan says the proposed Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplantation in Kozhikode will be completed within 30 months. The ₹271-crore facility at Chevayur is planned with 350 beds, 10 operation theatres and services intended to reduce transplant costs substantially.

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said construction of the proposed Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplantation in Kozhikode will be completed within 30 months. He made the announcement while speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Heart Care Society in Kozhikode on October 3.

According to Mr. Satheesan, ₹271 crore has been allocated for the institute, which is planned on a 20-acre site at Chevayur. The facility is intended to bring all services related to organ transplantation under one roof.

The Chief Minister said this arrangement would reduce the cost of transplant surgery to one-third. The institute is planned to have 350 beds and 10 operation theatres. A dermatology hospital has also been proposed on the same premises, with an allocation of ₹35 crore.

Mr. Satheesan said the institute would be developed as a centre of excellence with an attached research programme. The annual targets mentioned for the facility include 1,100 cornea transplants, 520 kidney transplants, 50 heart transplants, 40 lung transplants, 120 bone marrow transplants, 320 liver transplants, 15 intestine transplants, 15 pancreas transplants and 300 soft-tissue transplant surgeries.

He also said Kerala would seek to use its climate and other advantages to develop as a healthcare destination for patients from India and abroad. Wellness and rehabilitation centres, as well as facilities for stroke treatment, were also proposed. An awareness campaign on disease prevention and early detection would be undertaken, he said.

The foundation stone for the institute was laid by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in February. The project was reportedly progressing slowly after a change of government. MLAs K.

Praveenkumar and K. Jayanth, and society president K. Kunjali, attended the event.
