Lagos Orders Early Relocation from Flood-Prone Communities
Lagos authorities have told residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to move temporarily to safer ground after a seven-day flood alert covering the state and 14 others. The Lagos State Government has directed residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities to relocate immediately, citing a new seven-day flood alert from the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency. The advisory, identified as NFA-2026-2022, covers Lagos and 14 other states. Tokunbo Wahab, the state commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, said the government had intensified monitoring across vulnerable areas and other riverine communities.
The locations identified include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island Local Government Area, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri Sea Port, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty and Jetty Terminal B. The ministry also named Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi among communities requiring heightened attention. Wahab urged residents to move to higher ground before floodwaters rise and remain there until the peak of the resurgent rainy season has passed.
He said the period from September 19 to 25 required particular caution. The commissioner said Lagos normally experiences a second phase of the rainy season from September, bringing increased rainfall, higher water levels and tidal influences that may worsen flooding. He also warned that rainfall upstream and rising levels in connected waterways, including the Ogun River, could affect downstream communities.
Residents near rivers, lagoons, wetlands, drainage channels and other water bodies were advised to monitor official forecasts and prepare for temporary relocation when flooding becomes imminent.
