Madonna University in Nigeria has confirmed that some nursing students were expelled after recording and posting a video made inside the institution’s teaching hospital. The National Association of Nigerian Students called for the punishment to be reduced, arguing that expulsion could permanently damage the students’ education and careers.

Madonna University in Rivers State, Nigeria, has confirmed the expulsion of some nursing students over a video that circulated widely on social media. The university’s public relations officer, Chima Achu, told PREMIUM TIMES that the students recorded the video inside the institution’s teaching hospital and posted it with the caption, “No sick oo, nah Gen Z full hospital.” Achu said the university was preparing a formal response. He confirmed the expulsions but did not provide further details in the supplied material about the number of students involved or the university’s disciplinary process.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the university to reconsider the decision. Its president, Akinteye “Babtee” Afeez, said the students’ conduct was unacceptable and did not meet the standards of discipline and professionalism expected in the university community. However, Afeez argued that expulsion was too severe.

He said the affected students had invested years, money and hopes in nursing careers and that removal from the university could affect their education, professional prospects and mental wellbeing. NANS urged management to replace the expulsion with a stern written warning. Afeez said the students understood the seriousness of their conduct and had learned from the incident.

The association said discipline should correct and guide students rather than permanently end their education. It also said it supported academic excellence, ethical standards and responsible behaviour, while maintaining that it would not tolerate misconduct. The supplied material does not state whether Madonna University has accepted or rejected the appeal.
