Nigeria Democratic Congress gives Obi and Kwankwaso role in campaign council appointments

The Nigeria Democratic Congress says it is preparing to inaugurate a presidential campaign council in which its candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will have broad nomination powers. According to a statement by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the two candidates may nominate officers including the director-general, deputy director-general for the North, campaign spokesman and deputy, head of new media, and finance director and deputy. The party said the structure was developed after meetings involving Obi, Kwankwaso, National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson and other leaders.

The NDC said campaign funds would be paid into a dedicated presidential account. The finance director and deputy would manage the account with the party’s national treasurer, while officers nominated by the candidates and treasurer would provide oversight. The party said the arrangement was intended to promote transparency and comply with Independent National Electoral Commission reporting requirements under the Electoral Act.

The council’s inauguration, initially planned for the first week of September, was postponed because of Obi’s travel schedule. The NDC said a new date and membership would be announced after the candidates submit outstanding input. It also urged members to avoid internal disputes and said state and local officials must compile separate lists of election agents for scrutiny, ratification and training.
