NSCDC deploys 3,000 personnel for Abuja independence celebrations
Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps has deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory for security operations surrounding the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1. The deployment includes specialised units, undercover surveillance and monitoring of public spaces, critical infrastructure and locations considered vulnerable.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 3,000 personnel across Abuja ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations on October 1. The FCT Command said the operation was intended to strengthen security, maintain law and order and protect lives and property before, during and after the celebrations. The deployment was ordered by FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu.
Personnel from specialised units are taking part in the operation. They include the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Explosives Unit and the Counter-Terrorism Unit. The command said the deployment would cover strategic locations and areas considered vulnerable to security breaches.
These include shopping malls, markets, motor parks, amusement and recreational centres, as well as critical national assets and infrastructure across the capital. Undercover operatives have also been activated for surveillance and intelligence gathering. The command said particular attention would be given to places regarded as potential hideouts for criminals.
Uncompleted buildings and other identified black spots across the Federal Capital Territory were being monitored as part of efforts to prevent criminal activity and possible security breaches. Odumosu directed area commanders and divisional officers to maintain a strong operational presence in their respective area councils. He also told personnel to remain alert throughout the celebrations and warned that he would not tolerate security breaches.
