Odemwingie recalls Nigeria’s Olympic team borrowing Falcons’ kits

Former Nigeria forward Osaze Odemwingie has recalled how the country’s men’s Olympic football team wore kits belonging to the Super Falcons during the 2008 Beijing Games. Odemwingie described the episode while speaking with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade on her Rash for Christ podcast. He said the team’s progress through the tournament had apparently caught officials unprepared.

According to Odemwingie, officials expected Nigeria to exit early and sent the squad’s main supply of kits back home. When the team reached the knockout stages, the players had to find alternative clothing. “At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie said, according to Premium Times.

He added that the women’s team had not progressed to the same stage and had left its kits available. The unusual clothing was noticed by opponents. Odemwingie said players from the United States joked that the Nigerians appeared to be wearing the same outfits repeatedly.

With limited options, some members of the squad bought plain white T-shirts themselves. The kit problem did not prevent Nigeria from making a strong run. The team advanced to the gold-medal match against Argentina, where it lost 1-0.

Ángel Di María scored the only goal of the final, leaving Nigeria with the silver medal. Odemwingie’s account presents the shortage as an administrative miscalculation rather than a sporting setback. The team was coached by Samson Siasia during the Beijing tournament.

Odemwingie’s recollection adds an off-field episode to Nigeria’s memorable Olympic campaign, in which the squad continued to advance despite having to borrow the women’s team’s equipment and improvise with replacement shirts.
