Ogun governor says deep-sea port construction will start in November

Construction of Ogun State’s proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone will begin in November, Governor Dapo Abiodun has said. Abiodun announced the planned start while addressing All Progressives Congress stakeholders in Ijebu East and Ijebu North local government areas. His statement came days after he signed a memorandum of understanding with DP World MEA FZE in Paris, with President Bola Tinubu present.
The governor said a groundbreaking ceremony would be held in November and that construction would start immediately afterwards. He said the port was expected to be substantially completed within two and a half years. “By November, we will perform the groundbreaking and the construction will start immediately,” Abiodun said, according to Channels Television.
He valued the project at more than $7 billion. The project is planned for Ogun Waterside Local Government Area and is being undertaken in partnership with DP World, which the governor described as a major global port operator. Abiodun said the development represented an opportunity to expand Ogun’s maritime and economic potential.
He said the port had remained largely unrealised for more than three decades before his administration revived it as part of efforts to attract investment and accelerate development. Abiodun said the project would position Ogun as a major maritime destination and a hub for West Africa. The governor thanked Tinubu for supporting the project, including by witnessing the memorandum signing and assuring investors of federal backing.
He also cited the rehabilitation of the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Ore Road and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as infrastructure projects that could improve access to Ogun East. Abiodun additionally highlighted bitumen deposits extending from Ijebu East towards Ondo State and crude oil resources in parts of Ogun, including Odogbolu. He said his administration would continue exploring opportunities to use the State’s natural resources for economic development.
