One person has been taken to hospital after a fire at the Helping Hand aged-care facility on Buxton Street in North Adelaide, according to ABC News Australia. The patient suffered a head laceration, while a number of people were evacuated from the building during the incident.
The fire broke out in a ground-floor room at about 12:30pm. The Metropolitan Fire Service sent 34 firefighters in 12 appliances to the facility, where crews quickly located the blaze and brought it under control within 15 minutes, MFS’s Nicolle Bradley said.
MFS commander Phil Ross said firefighters prevented the fire from spreading further through the facility. He said multiple people called Triple Zero about the blaze and that smoke damage affected some adjacent levels.
The affected area was described as the independent-living side of the accommodation. Mr Ross said residents there had their own 240-volt smoke alarms, but the alarms were local and not monitored by the MFS.
Mr Ross estimated the damage at about $200,000. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, and the supplied report did not provide further details about the condition of the person taken to hospital or the extent of the smoke damage.
