Oyo inquiry into school abduction expected to submit report

A judicial commission investigating the abduction of students and teachers from schools in Oyo State is expected to submit its report to Governor Seyi Makinde today. The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the report would be formally received at the Executive Council Chamber in the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. The event was scheduled to begin at noon.

Oyelade said senior government officials, security chiefs, religious leaders, labour representatives and other stakeholders were expected to attend. Representatives of the affected communities and schools were also listed among the invitees. The commission was established after a bandit attack on May 15, 2026, involving Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and Local Authority Primary School in Esinele and Yawota communities, within Oriire Local Government Area.

According to the state government, 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted in the attack. The victims were held by their abductors for 56 days in the Old Oyo National Park before being released on July 10. Two teachers, Michael Oyedokun and Adesiyan Adegboye, died during the incident.

The principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, Mrs Racheal Alamu, was among those abducted, according to the information provided by the state government. Governor Makinde inaugurated the Judicial Commission of Inquiry on July 31, with a mandate to investigate and uncover the circumstances surrounding the abduction. The commission’s submission is expected to provide the state government with its findings on the incident and the issues covered by its mandate.
