PETROAN tells Nigerian fuel retailers to inspect dispensing meters

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria, or PETROAN, has directed its members to inspect dispensing meters nationwide after concerns about under-dispensing were raised by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. PETROAN national president Billy Gillis-Harry disclosed the instruction during an interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He said the association held an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday and later circulated a message asking members to check their meters quickly.

Gillis-Harry said equipment can become faulty through use and may result in either under-dispensing or over-dispensing. He said PETROAN members were working to ensure motorists received the quantity shown on the pump. He advised customers to watch the quantity displayed while fuel is being dispensed, understand their vehicle’s tank capacity and request receipts.

He also encouraged motorists to compare the amount displayed with the quantity delivered. Gillis-Harry said PETROAN works with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment’s Weights and Measures Division and the NMDPRA to keep meters functional and accurate. The NMDPRA has warned that stations found short-changing consumers could face sanctions, including loss of their operating licences.
