The Plateau State Government has assured motorists that the Jos-Barkin Ladi highway is open after an attack in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, left three vigilantes dead. According to Channels Television, gunmen reportedly attacked the community at about 1am on Friday. The victims included the community’s youth leader.
The incident prompted women and youths to block the highway, causing congestion and leaving some travellers stranded. In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Communication Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government condemned the killings, expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and urged residents to remain calm. It warned that blocking the road could create additional risks for travellers.
The government said security agencies were working to identify and apprehend those responsible. Security personnel were subsequently deployed to maintain peace and prevent further escalation. Authorities also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, said the victims were killed while protecting their community. He called for intensified efforts to find the attackers and stronger protection for vulnerable communities in Barkin Ladi and elsewhere in Plateau.
