According to Ikenga, the joint team was conducting visibility patrols in Nnewi North when officers stopped two men travelling on a Tiger 150 motorcycle without a registration number.
A search allegedly found the firearm. The men were identified as Ekwulugo Chiemierie Joseph, 33, and Enyiobi Geoffrey Somtochukwu, 29. Police said both suspects were taken into custody and were assisting with the investigation.
Investigators are seeking to establish how the suspects came into possession of the pistol, where it was obtained and what it was intended to be used for. Police are also examining other circumstances surrounding the recovery and whether the case has links to additional suspects or activities.
