Police begin inquiry after 37 miners die in NSCDC custody

The Niger State Police Command has taken control of the scene where 37 suspected illegal miners died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC. The investigation follows a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to establish the circumstances of the deaths and ensure accountability, transparency and respect for the constitutional rights of the deceased. Niger Commissioner of Police Adamu Elleman ordered Operation Flush patrol teams to secure and cordon off the area.

The deputy commissioner overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna has begun preliminary forensic inquiries, according to the command. Police said all relevant facts would be examined professionally and diligently. He said any findings would be handled in accordance with the law and due process. The NSCDC on Sunday paraded its suspended Niger State commandant, Suberu Aniviye, and other officers connected with the deaths. The officers appeared at the corps’ national headquarters in Sauka, Abuja, where NSCDC spokesman Babawale Afolabi briefed journalists on preliminary findings.
