Rain Delays Reopening of First Niger Bridge

The planned reopening of the First Niger Bridge to vehicular traffic has been delayed after persistent rainfall disrupted maintenance and rehabilitation work on the ageing crossing, according to Timothy Emenike, the Acting Federal Controller of Works at the Anambra Field Headquarters. The bridge had been scheduled to reopen after a two-week complete restriction of vehicle movement. Emenike said the repairs had not been completed and that some reconstructed sections were affected or washed away by rain.

He appealed for patience from commuters and other road users, saying the weather had made it difficult to carry out the finishing work required before traffic can safely return. He said three consecutive days of sunshine would provide the window needed to complete the outstanding repairs and prepare the bridge for reopening. The closure has forced motorists to rely largely on the Second Niger Bridge and other diversionary routes.

The restrictions have resulted in longer journeys and higher transport costs, while pedestrians have also faced difficulties using alternative routes. The state government had earlier announced that the bridge would be closed from September 7 to 21, 2026, to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out emergency maintenance and rehabilitation intended to improve its safety and durability. The reopening deadline has now been overtaken by the continuing repair work and wet weather.
