At least two people have been killed and six injured in what Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyev described as a “massive” overnight Ukrainian drone attack, according to BBC News. The reported strikes caused fires at homes and a warehouse, while an oil refinery in Moscow was damaged.
Mr Vorobyev said 249 drones had been shot down. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin separately said 450 drones heading towards the capital had been intercepted, describing the incident as an “unprecedented attack”. The differing figures were not explained in the supplied report.
The governor said a 44-year-old woman died in Sofyino after a drone hit a three-storey residential building. Five people, including two children, were injured there, he said. In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man was killed when a drone struck a private house.
Mr Sobyanin said a drone hit a building near one of Moscow’s boulevards and that a facility at an oil refinery was damaged. Sheremetyevo airport warned passengers that temporary restrictions were in place, while Vnukovo airport halted all arrivals and departures.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show explosions over the Moscow region and a burning warehouse, but BBC News said it had not verified the footage. The report also said Russia and Ukraine had recently intensified strikes against energy and transport facilities and major logistics hubs.
The reported attack came as Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes had killed seven people, including two children, in the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday. Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko said a mother and her two children were killed in Fastiv, while Sumy official Oleh Hryhorov said four people died when a Russian drone hit their car.
