Supreme Court schedules hearing on Mahua Moitra’s circuit-house eviction plea

India’s Supreme Court will hear on October 1 Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s plea concerning her alleged eviction from a circuit house in Nadia, West Bengal, The Hindu reported. The case was listed after a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant was asked to defer the matter because Ms. Moitra’s arguing counsel, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, was occupied elsewhere.

Moitra alleges that district administration officials required her to leave the state-owned property despite having been allotted a room. The incident occurred late at night in August in her Krishnanagar constituency. Her lawyer told the court that the matter required an independent investigation and involved an important constitutional issue.

The lawyer also said the incident had occurred despite an earlier protective order from the High Court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected to the MP approaching the Supreme Court directly. He said there were factual inaccuracies and questioned whether individual issues involving MPs should be brought directly before the apex court.

Ms. Moitra said in a social media post that a crowd had gathered outside the circuit house on August 14 and shouted slogans after she refused to leave. She later wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging harassment by the district administration.

She said she was entitled to stay as an MP and that no one had informed her of a booking embargo when she checked in. The Supreme Court’s hearing is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2026.
