Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Viswanathan says senior professors will be selected to oversee 11 State universities without vice-chancellors. Convenor committees at 13 universities will obtain panels from their Syndicates and choose professors to serve with the necessary powers, according to The Hindu.

Eleven Tamil Nadu universities without vice-chancellors are to have senior professors placed in charge of their administration, The Hindu reports. Higher Education Minister Viswanathan said convenor committees operating in 13 State universities would obtain panels of senior professors from the respective Syndicates. The committees would then select one professor to act as vice-chancellor in charge.

The selected professors would have the necessary powers to oversee the universities’ administration, according to the minister’s statement. The available report does not identify the 11 universities without vice-chancellors or explain why the number of universities covered by the convenor committees is 13. It also does not provide a timetable for the selections, the duration of the interim arrangements or details of any recruitment process for permanent vice-chancellors.
