Telangana ends 2026 monsoon with 17% rainfall deficit
Telangana received 615.5 mm of rain during the 2026 southwest monsoon, below its seasonal normal of 740.6 mm and 38% less than in 2025. Rainfall was deficient in 18 of the State’s 33 districts, with the sharpest monthly shortfall recorded in August.
Telangana’s 2026 southwest monsoon ended with a 17% rainfall deficit, with the State receiving 615.5 mm between June and September against a seasonal normal of 740.6 mm. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society showed that rainfall was 38% lower than in 2025, when the State recorded 988.3 mm. The shortfall occurred during all four months of the monsoon season.
June rainfall was 115.3 mm, 12% below normal. July recorded 224 mm against a normal of 227.4 mm, a marginal deficit of 1%. The largest monthly decline came in August, when rainfall was 134.5 mm, or 38% below the normal 215.8 mm.
September ended 15% below normal, with 141.7 mm. Rainfall conditions varied across the State. Fifteen of Telangana’s 33 districts remained in the normal category, while 18 were classified as deficient.
No district recorded excess or large excess rainfall, and none was placed in the large-deficient or no-rain categories. At the mandal level, 320 were deficient and five were large deficient. A further 259 were normal, while 36 recorded excess rainfall and one recorded large excess rainfall.
Urban areas also saw substantial shortfalls. Hyderabad received 458.2 mm against a normal 627.2 mm, a 27% deficit. Medchal Malkajgiri was 33% deficient, while Rangareddy recorded a 14% deficit.
The combined shortfall across the GHMC, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation areas was 26%. Siddipet recorded 10% more rain than normal and was the best-performing district. Jogulamba Gadwal had the largest deficit, at 41%.
The report linked the weak monsoon to evolving El Niño conditions, which can affect atmospheric circulation and reduce moisture-bearing winds over India.
