President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation by a few days and will return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency announced in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London before travelling to Paris. The Presidency said he had remained in touch with developments at home and continued directing government affairs while abroad.
During the trip, he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore. The statement said Tinubu ordered an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Minna after their detention by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. It also said Vice President Kashim Shettima had been delegated to attend some official functions.
Shettima travelled to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he is representing Tinubu and will deliver Nigeria’s national statement. With Shettima away, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume would continue representing the President at official events. The Presidency described comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a United States-based lobbying firm questioning Tinubu’s absence from the assembly as “baseless insinuation.” It said Senator Abubakar Yari was leading party leaders in consultations with traditional rulers.
