Tinubu urges global action against terrorism financing and arms trafficking

Nigeria has urged stronger international cooperation against terrorism and other transnational security threats, with President Bola Tinubu calling for intelligence-sharing and action against the financing of violence. Tinubu made the appeal in Nigeria’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at the session.

The president said terrorism, organised crime, cyberattacks and illicit finance exploit gaps between national security systems, making collective action necessary. He cited Nigeria’s experience confronting Boko Haram, ISWAP and other armed groups, arguing that military gains need lasting foundations in education, economic opportunity, accountable government and protection of communities’ rights. He also called for measures to strengthen institutions and prevent illegal weapons from crossing borders.

Tinubu said instability in the Sahel could affect neighbouring countries by displacing people, weakening regional integration and undermining democratic governance. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working through the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and wider international partnerships. The president also argued that development and security were closely connected.

He said violence could destroy livelihoods while injustice and exclusion could help replenish extremist movements. On conflicts including the war in Sudan, he urged diplomacy, civilian protection, humanitarian access and respect for international humanitarian and human rights law. Tinubu said military victories alone could not secure lasting peace, advocating dialogue, reconciliation, inclusive political processes and greater investment in peacebuilding and prevention.

The 81st General Assembly runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all”.
