TMC legislator alleges attacks on car on consecutive days

Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh has alleged that his car was attacked on two consecutive days while he travelled to political programmes in West Bengal. Ghosh said on Sunday that motorcycle-borne attackers smashed the vehicle’s windscreen with hammers in the Narkeldanga area of Kolkata. He also alleged that one of the attackers pointed a gun at members of his security team.

The legislator said he was travelling to an event in his Beliaghata constituency when the incident occurred. He showed reporters broken pieces of windscreen glass and said he had lodged a police complaint. The alleged attack followed an incident in Hooghly district on Saturday, when Ghosh said stones and eggs were thrown at his car as he travelled to a meeting attended by TMC leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Yesterday there was an attack on me at Uttarpara. Today, they wanted to kill me,” Ghosh told reporters. After the alleged incident in Uttarpara, he took the vehicle to West Bengal Police headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in Kolkata but said he was not allowed to enter.

He later filed a complaint at a police station. Ghosh blamed the BJP-led political establishment in the state and alleged that police were failing to protect an elected representative. BJP leaders rejected the accusation.

Uttarpara BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty said Ghosh was staging a drama, while party spokesperson Debajit Sarkar alleged that Ghosh had arranged the attacks by provoking TMC workers and said the BJP was not involved. The supplied report did not give details of arrests or any police findings.
