Usor promises to meet expectations after winning Super Eagles debut

Nigeria forward Moses Usor has pledged to give his best whenever he represents the Super Eagles after scoring the winning goal on his senior international debut against Madagascar. The Austrian-based LASK player struck in the 65th minute as Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday. Ehsan Kari put Madagascar ahead before George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time.

Usor, introduced alongside Moses Simon, then completed the comeback and secured the victory for Nigeria. Speaking to the Super Eagles media team, Usor acknowledged the expectations associated with wearing the national-team shirt. He said his priority was to contribute to the attack and make the most of every opportunity.

He described his first appearance as overwhelming, saying he initially found it difficult to believe he was playing at that level. The forward was particularly pleased that his family watched the match. He said he knelt to pray after scoring, as he does after every goal, but that the moment felt different because his relatives were present.

He also described playing alongside established Super Eagles players as a long-held dream. Usor credited Simon with encouraging him to play naturally and take risks when facing defenders one-on-one. The forward said that advice helped shape his approach before he scored the decisive goal.

Nigeria travelled to Bissau for Tuesday’s second Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau. Coach Éric Chelle will be seeking another victory as the Super Eagles continue their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
