Abia farmers endorse PDP candidate ahead of 2027 election

The Abia chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria says more than 40,000 members have adopted PDP governorship candidate Kelechi Anosike for the February 2027 election. The association cited his proposed agricultural, food-security and rural-development programmes in announcing its support.
More than 40,000 farmers affiliated with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Abia State have endorsed Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Kelechi Anosike for the February 6, 2027 election. AFAN state chairman Mike Okezie announced the decision on Tuesday after leading the association’s executive to meet Anosike at his campaign office in Umuahia. Okezie said the association supported the candidate because of his proposed agricultural policies and welfare programmes.
In a resolution, AFAN cited Anosike’s plans for food security, rural development and farmers’ welfare. The proposals include Operation Feed Abia, restoration of agricultural extension services, farm mechanisation, grants, support programmes, revitalised farm settlements and rural-development measures. The association said it would mobilise members in the state’s 17 local government areas to participate peacefully in the election, promote the candidate’s agricultural policies and engage with his campaign on agricultural value-chain development.
Anosike’s campaign chairman, Empire Kanu, welcomed the endorsement. PDP state chairman and deputy governorship candidate Amah Abraham said farmers should be treated as strategic partners in governance. He pledged that a future PDP administration would nominate a farmer as commissioner for agriculture.
The campaign council’s director-general, Obinna Nwachukwu, proposed a farmers’ directorate within the campaign structure. Anosike approved the proposal and said farmers from across the state would be involved, with participation extending to local government areas, wards and polling units. Anosike promised to restore extension services, encourage modern farming practices, reduce excessive chemical use and help local governments provide tractors.
He also proposed grants, farm-settlement renewal, agricultural-product packaging and support for fishery, piggery, poultry and ranching. He said a Rural Development Agency would improve rural roads and make agriculture a driver of employment and wealth creation. The campaign did not provide independent evidence for the number of farmers represented by the endorsement.
