Afenifere backs Tinubu-Shettima ticket for 2027 election

Pan-Yoruba organisation Afenifere has endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for a second term while calling for a free, fair and credible 2027 election. The group also urged security agencies to prevent violence, condemned attacks and sought support for state anti-open-grazing laws.
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere has endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for a second term, while calling for a peaceful, free and credible general election in 2027. The organisation announced the decision in a communique issued after a caucus meeting at the residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State. Its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, released the statement in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Afenifere said it reached the decision after reviewing the Federal Government’s activities and Nigeria’s political landscape. It said Tinubu was committed to restructuring the country, promoting economic prosperity and inclusivity, deepening democracy, tackling insecurity and restoring hope. The group urged voters to support the president, but also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to guarantee a peaceful voting environment.
Politicians, it said, should conduct campaigns without violence, thuggery or character assassination and allow peace to prevail before, during and after the election. Afenifere expressed concern about what it described as treasonable threats by bandits and terrorists to disrupt the polls, referring to information attributed to the Department of State Services. It called for decisive action against criminal groups and condemned attacks on a military base on the Igbeti-Igboho road in Oyo State and in the Middle Belt and North-East.
The organisation requested an immediate security sweep of borderlands and forests, as well as investigations into alleged collaborators of bandits and sponsors of illegal mining. It also urged federal support for states that have enacted anti-open-grazing laws, citing continuing farmer-herder clashes in parts of Kwara, Ondo, Osun, Ogun and Oyo states. The communique also said Afenifere was establishing a Yoruba Language Renaissance Trust Fund to promote wider use of the language.
