The AFL trade period begins with clubs assessing major player moves, including Zak Butters, Lachie Neale, Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan, while draft strategy is shaped by new rules and Tasmania’s future entry. Clubs are also seeking rucks and key-position players to address roster gaps.

The AFL trade period has opened with clubs pursuing established stars, list depth and draft advantages ahead of the next season. Zak Butters is expected to attract significant attention after finishing in the top 10 of the Brownlow Medal. The Western Bulldogs are pursuing the Port Adelaide midfielder, while Port considers whether to match the contract offer and what compensation would be available.

Other prominent players linked with moves include two-time Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale, who is set to join Collingwood, and former Greater Western Sydney players Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan. Greene is moving to Geelong, while Hogan is also set to join Collingwood. The source material says up to 40 trades involving about 30 players could occur during the player-movement period.

Clubs are showing increased interest in rucks and key-position players as teams seek more depth in those areas. Draft choices are another major focus. A new AFL rule gives Essendon and up to four other clubs an additional high-end selection if the club chooses a player linked through father-son or academy rules.

The rule is designed to assist lower-ranked clubs, but the bonus selection disappears if the original pick is traded. South Australian key-position player Dougie Cochrane is expected to be central to that discussion. He is linked to Port Adelaide through its Next Generation Academy and could become the second NGA player selected with the first pick.

Tasmania’s arrival is also influencing list management. The new club has unveiled its first eight players, increasing concern among clubs about future compromised drafts. This year’s draft is considered deeper beyond the early selections than last year’s, making current picks more valuable to some clubs.

The trade period will determine how teams balance immediate recruitment with long-term draft planning.
