Anambra police arrest suspected cult member after Onitsha gathering disrupted
Police in Anambra State say they disrupted a suspected cult-related gathering in Fegge, Onitsha, after receiving intelligence about the meeting. The Anambra State Police Command says it disrupted a suspected cult-related gathering at Abagana Street in Fegge, Onitsha, and arrested one person. Police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement on Sunday that operatives from Fegge Police Station acted on credible intelligence before moving to the location. They arrested Chinedu Ike, 25, while other people suspected of belonging to the group fled after seeing the officers, according to the statement.
Ikenga said the arrested suspect allegedly admitted during preliminary questioning to being a member of the Vikings Confraternity. The allegation has not been tested in court. The command said it had begun intelligence-led efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
It is also investigating whether they may have been involved in cult-related activity or other violent crimes in the area. Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama ordered that the case be transferred to the Violence and Cult-Related Crimes Unit for discreet investigation and further action. The command said it would continue using intelligence-led and proactive policing to disrupt cult-related activity and prevent associated violence.
It urged residents to remain vigilant and provide information that could help officers identify and arrest the suspects who escaped.
