Sahani accused the Election Commission of becoming an arm of the Bharatiya Janata Party and alleged that Kumar was undermining the Constitution. He also claimed that people who had worked with the election chief would eventually face imprisonment. The VIP leader predicted that a Congress-led government would be formed in 2029 and said Kumar would be the first person sent to prison.
He further claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might also face imprisonment, without providing evidence for the allegations. Sahani said elections belonged to the people and accused the Prime Minister of undermining democratic institutions. He referred to the recent West Bengal and Bihar Assembly elections while alleging that the BJP had benefited from the Election Commission’s conduct.
The remarks came during a wider controversy involving Kumar and two other election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. Reports have said the two commissioners raised objections about decisions connected with electoral rolls. The Election Commission has said the reported queries and observations were part of normal internal functioning.
