Chennai drain work near Virugambakkam canal due in two weeks
Work on a storm-water drain where Kaliyamman Koil Street meets Chennai’s Virugambakkam canal is expected to finish within two weeks, municipal Commissioner G.S. Sameeran says. Officials were also told to complete a new bridge before the Northeast monsoon, as canal improvements and mosquito-control measures continue.
Work on a storm-water drain at the junction of Kaliyamman Koil Street and the Virugambakkam canal will be completed within two weeks, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said during an inspection on Sunday. Sameeran reviewed development work along the canal in the Kodambakkam zone.
The wider project has an estimated cost of ₹30 crore and includes retaining walls, fencing, and the removal of silt and waste. He also inspected construction of a bridge across the canal by Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The bridge project is estimated to cost ₹12 crore, and the existing bridge is being removed as part of the work.
Officials were instructed to complete the replacement bridge before the Northeast monsoon. The source material did not provide a separate completion date for the wider canal works. The Virugambakkam canal begins at Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in Virugambakkam and passes through Chinmaya Nagar, Saligramam and M.M.D.A.

The commissioner also urged residents to seek medical treatment promptly if they developed a fever. The inspection covered both drainage and public-health measures in the area.
