Covenant University leads Nigerian institutions in 2027 global rankings

Covenant University has regained the top position among Nigerian universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It was placed alongside the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos in the global 801–1000 band, while 29 Nigerian institutions appeared in the latest edition, up from 24 the previous year.

The private university, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos were all placed in the 801–1000 global band. THE listed Covenant first among the Nigerian institutions, reversing its position in the previous edition, when the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos were placed ahead of it.
Covenant has featured among the world’s top 1,000 universities since 2019, except in last year’s ranking. The latest result therefore marks a return to the leading position among Nigerian institutions in the ranking. A total of 29 Nigerian universities featured in the 2027 edition, compared with 24 in 2026.
THE said Nigeria had the highest number of ranked universities in sub-Saharan Africa, where the number of participating institutions rose from 55 to 69. The University of Cape Town was the highest-ranked institution in sub-Saharan Africa, rising to joint 147th globally from joint 164th in the previous edition. Across all countries and territories, THE ranked 2,297 universities, compared with 2,191 in the 2026 ranking.
Among the other Nigerian institutions, Ahmadu Bello University was placed in the 1001–1200 band. Osun State University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were placed in the 1201–1400 band. Six Nigerian universities were placed in the 1401–1600 band: the Federal University of Technology, Minna; Nnamdi Azikiwe University; Obafemi Awolowo University; the University of Benin; the University of Jos; and the University of Maiduguri.
Other institutions appeared in bands ranging from 1601–1800 to 2001 and above. THE said its assessment uses 17 performance indicators across teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. The measures include research reputation, citation impact, international collaboration, industry income and patents.
