Aliko Dangote says his first grandson, an electrical engineer, wants to work at KPMG or PwC to gain experience in finance before joining the Dangote Group. Dangote also outlined the conglomerate’s five-year planning approach and said his daughters already hold executive positions across its businesses.

Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote has said his first grandson plans to gain experience at KPMG or PwC before joining the family business. Dangote disclosed this on Tuesday at an investor engagement in Nairobi organised around the initial public offering of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery for Kenyan and East African institutional investors. He said his grandson, who is an electrical engineer, was currently more interested in learning about finance outside the conglomerate.

“He wants to go and get experience with KPMG or PWC. Then after he’ll come and join us,” Dangote said. At the event, Dangote introduced his first daughter, Mariya Dangote, and her husband, Alassane, to the audience.

He described Mariya as shy before inviting the couple to stand and wave. The industrialist also said the Dangote Group did not operate with 10-year visions. In his view, distant targets could encourage people to relax because they regarded the future as too far away.

Instead, he said the group used five-year plans developed with senior executives and directors. Dangote’s three daughters—Mariya, Halima and Fatima—already hold executive responsibilities in different parts of the conglomerate, which has interests in cement, sugar, refining, fertiliser and manufacturing. He has previously said that having a male heir is not a priority and expressed confidence that one or more of his daughters could eventually lead the group.
